Plein Air Painting – The Art of Study

  • Tuesdays 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM (ongoing class beginning January 2010)

This class primarily places the “plein air experience” in the realm of “study”.  Viewed from this perspective plein air painting is a catalyst for steady growth which will benefit all studio work.  Drawing on his training experience with renowned landscape painter, Scott L. Christensen, Robert reveals strategies for gathering critical information and redesigning what nature gives us.  Special emphasis will be placed on the writings of John F. Carlson, Andrew Loomis and Edgar Payne.

Oil Painting From Life

  • Tuesday Evening – 7:00PM – 9:30PM (ongoing class)

Course Description:
Using still life as subject matter this course develops the student’s powers of observation and equips them with portable skills necessary for painting in all genres. Traditional conventions for transmitting form and light will be communicated in a way that makes them completely useful to the developing artist. Heavy emphasis is placed on John Singer Sargent’s Five Types of Light as well as the teachings of John F. Carlson, Birge Harrison and other notable masters. Secondary emphasis is placed on drawing within the context of oil painting.
Why learn to paint from life rather than photos?
Painting from life trains our eye in a way that simply cannot be accomplished working from photos. Knowledge gained working from life is the foundation of all great representational artists’ work past and present.
